A few posts back I showed you all the work we had been doing on our fireplace. Now I’m back to share our fireplace makeover, part two! You may have noticed it in my Christmas house tour, but I didn’t give details.
When I look at the before and after photos, I can’t believe we had reservations about doing this! It has really changed the look of our living room dramatically!
Fireplace Before
If you remember, I’ve talked about whether or not to update the fireplace on the blog before. We held off for so long because it was original to the house (1928), and we felt like we should leave it alone. But one day, I just decided I couldn’t handle the “orange” wood any longer and I started sanding. The rest is history!
Fireplace After Part One of Makeover
Now, here she is completely finished!

You can read about what we did in the first part of the makeover here. Part two of the makeover really wasn’t a whole lot, but I love the difference it made. Hubby painted the “box” part of the wall that stuck out over the chimney white (instead of ivory) to match the mantel. Then he painted two pieces of wood and nailed those up on either side of the “box”. They go all the way up to the crown molding we installed just after we moved in. Now the fireplace goes from ceiling to floor and really creates a focal point in the living room.
I really feel like I can decorate differently now. My tastes have changed so much (and I’ve learned a lot about design), and this just helps a lot with the look I want to achieve.
It sets the backdrop so beautifully for anything now!
What do you think? I feel like we updated but didn’t lose the integrity or charm of the old house. Do you like it better before or after????

I love the changes you made to the fireplace. It looks so much fresher and cohesive but you kept the vintage details. Awesome job!

Beautiful job of freshening up the look without sacrificing it’s original charm. Love the photographs, too, everything looks so cozy!

Thank you, Sharon! I think we kept the original charm as well. Glad you think so too. <3

Nice job! I did love the original green tile (but not the orange wood), but the new fireplace is truly stunning and versatile. The idea of placing the simple pieces on the sides to make it look floor to ceiling is genius!

Thank you! I loved that green tile too, actually. But after we got the mantel painted white, my husband HATED it, and I was good to keep or change it. So we went ahead and changed it and I’m glad. It is truly much more versatile! Thanks so much for reading!
