I don’t know about y’all, but when the weather starts getting chilly, I love a good cup of hot chocolate! I’m sharing this salted caramel butterscotch hot chocolate recipe today. I got a craving for butterscotch recently and decided to see what I could come up with.
What is it about hot chocolate in the fall/winter? There’s something comforting about sitting down with a steaming mug topped with whip cream. Add a fire in the fireplace and a good movie, and you’ve pretty much got the perfect night! Anyone out there agree?
I realize not everyone is a butterscotch person, but I am. All the way. My dad is a butterscotch lover, so maybe that’s where I get it. Butterscotch, toffee, and caramel are three of my favorite things ever. I love the rich, decadent desserts made with these ingredients! Not good for anyone’s blood sugar or waistline, however! Ugh.
Anyway, on to the recipe, because I know that’s what you’re waiting for! I looked for a recipe on Pinterest that was going to be good and easy, with few ingredients. I ran across this one, at Home Made Lovely and tweaked it to get what I wanted.
Ingredients for Drink
- Butterscotch Chips
- Cocoa Powder
- Milk
- Sea Salt Flakes (I used these that I had on hand from another recipe. They’re amazing!)
Ingredients for Topping
- Whip Cream
- Caramel Sauce
- Sea Salt Flakes
Directions
- Add 1/4 cup butterscotch chips and 1/2 tsp sea salt flakes to 1 cup milk. Heat in microwave for one minute, stir, heat in 20 second increments until the butterscotch is completely dissolved. You may taste here and see if the butterscotch is strong enough for you. If not, feel free to add more chips and repeat this step.
- Add 1 tblsp cocoa to the mixture and use a whisk to mix it well until there are no chocolate lumps.
- Pour into cup!
THAT’S IT!!!
Now you’re ready for the yummy topping!
- Add whip cream to the top, as much or as little as you’d like. (I’ll let you in on a little secret. I like to store cool whip in the freezer and use it for hot drinks. It doesn’t melt as fast, and you get to enjoy the goodness longer.)
- Give the whipped topping a good dousing of caramel topping!
- Add sea salt flakes to the top.
ENJOY your dessert in a mug!
Pin this for later! You know you’re gonna need this one for those cuddled-up-by-the-fire-Christmas-movie nights coming soon!
